Should the map be shown when the entity itself doesn't have coordinates, but a place is linked?

E.g. the bibliography Piccottini 1976 has a place linked but no data itself, should the linked place/the linked places show up?

It depends. For an entity like Source, absolutely. For References (Bibliography, Edition and External Reference) it is not really needed.

Like Bernhard I think it won't be necessary for references.
But I would add map locations at person/group for events they have participated at.
