Description

I would like to be able to add an event describing the use of an artifact. For example, I would like to indicate that a manuscript (entered as an artifact) was read at a specific time (in which case "reading of the manuscript" would be the event). Would this be possible? It is currently possible to link Acquisition, Move, and Production events to artifacts, but neither appears to be suitable in this case.

Thank you Nicholas for this interesting question. I assigned it to our model expert Stefan, kindly asking him to look into it.

Sorry for the delay. Easter Holidays caused a huge jam in my mails.
One possibility would be to link an activity E7 (or subclass) via P16 "used specific object" to any E70 "Thing" (or subclass) entities. https://www.cidoc-crm.org/Property/p16-used-specific-object/version-7.1.1

e.g. E7 "reading of manuscript MGH DD Karol. I S. (479)" - P14 carried out by - E21 "me" AND at the same time: E7 "reading of manuscript MGH DD Karol. I S. (479)" - P16 "used specific object" E31 "MGH DD Karol. I (479)"

Thanks a lot Stefan for looking into it, your suggestion sounds very useful.
Sadly I'm currently too busy to look into it in more detail but I put this issue on the roadmap, to not lose sight of it.

Oh and by the way, congratulations to Nicholas for creating the issue 2,000 :)

Picking up this issue again. A few follow up questions regarding Stefan's described approach:

  • Should we "just" add a field at Activity to select an object that was used in that event. Or should we create an "own" OpenAtlas event class to select from only for that purpose?
  • Which classes should be offered to select from: E31 (document), E22 (physical object), E20 (biological object), ...?

I will put it on the agenda for the next developer meeting but @Stefan Eichert and all, feel free to comment before.

One possibility would be to use the modification event that can be used with a direct connection to an artifact. See https://redmine.openatlas.eu/projects/relico/wiki/Data_model

A manuscript can be targeted by the modification event. The name modification can be misleading at the first glance but it doesn't need to be seen as a physical modification. E.g. the status of a manuscript can be modified from unread to read or unused to used etc.
This way we can stick to the model and map the desired usage of an artifact.

Thank you for the feedback. So we will say modification can be used with an artifact also to track usage like reading a book.
