as far as I understand these are 2 topics which we can, although connected, discuss separately to make it a bit easier.

Dates¶

In OpenAtlas a source represents an E33 (Linguistic Object) CIDOC class and taken from their specification:
... the CIDOC CRM treats instances of E33 Linguistic Object independently from the medium or method by which they are expressed ...

This means that for our purposes if you e.g. enter a written book, the book would be an artifact and the content (the text) would be a source. You can link the artifact to the source at the source detail view.
Dates can be entered either at the artifact directly, or in case you want to add more information (e.g. the author) you can do this via an Production event (not Creation, see the manual).
This also means that sorting via dates would have to be done via the artifacts.

Sub entities¶

It is already possible to create sub artifacts but creating sub sources is not implemented and currently on the wishlist (#1970).
We might consider implementing it after we finished #2464 (Refactor OpenAtlas classes), which would make it much more easier. It would than be possible to add e.g. a page to a source and also link an artifact (as the physical presentation of the source) with dates.

By the way, it is possible to link issues in Redmine, having the nice effect that respective issues are linked in a structured way in both direction which is also nicely displayed.
After you have created an issue there is a Related issues section under the description where you can click add. I've linked this issue with #1970 here to demonstrate this.
