Feature #1647
closedComposition of artifacts and human remains
Added by Jona Schlegel over 2 years ago. Updated about 2 years ago.
Description
This would allow us to describe different parts of a graffito.
Implementation- Artifacts can now have other artifacts as subs and human remains can have other human remains as subs which allows complex compositions
- It can be done when creating/updating an artifact/human remains in the Super field

- Category set to Backend
- Status changed from New to Assigned
- Assignee set to Stefan Eichert
- Target version set to Wishlist
Thank you for reporting, I assigned it to Stefan in the first step, kindly asking him to evaluate the implementation with CIDOC.
After that we can think about how to implement it in the user interface, estimate the development time and than move it from the wishlist to the actual roadmap.

We could use a one to many relation between physical things in order to document that one physical thing forms part of a superior physical thing:
"physical thing" (E18) - "is composed of/forms part of" (P46) - "physical thing" (E18)
Right now we have this already implemented on a 4 level hierarchy for archaeological sources (Arch. Site - composed of - arch. feature - strat. unit - artifact/find)
If we would use this in a dynamic way, this would allow to map different branches of sub units of physical things in order to document the full extent of the physical thing and all its components.
E.g.
Root: Graffito 1 1st Level Children: Background, Main Motif, Tag, Side motif, Signature 2nd Level Children: Background - Tree, Background - Skyline, Main Motif - Human 3rd Level Children: Background - Skyline - Building 1, Background - Skyline - Building 2, Main Motif - Human - Face 4th Level Children: Main Motif - Human - Face - Nose, Main Motif - Human - Face - Eyes, Main Motif - Human - Face - Ears 5th Level Children: Main Motif - Human - Face - Eyes - left eye, Main Motif - Human - Face - Eyes - right eye, Main Motif - Human - Face - Ears - right ear 6th Level Children: Main Motif - Human - Face - Ears - right ear - Earring 7th Level Children: Main Motif - Human - Face - Ears - right ear - Earring - pendant etc. etc.

Thanks again Stefan for looking into this and proposing a CIDOC conform model implementation. I put in on the agenda for the next developer meeting for further discussion and on the roadmap.

After discussing this with Stefan and Nina we decided to try following approach:
E18 (physical objects) can be connected with P46 (is composed of) to any other E18 and also E20 (biological object) or E22 (human made object).
But once the hierarchy "switched" to E20 or E22 it has to stay there, e.g. a biological object can only consists of other biological objects but not of physical objects or human made objects.
Because this requires as prerequisite #1587 (Link artifacts and human remains to places directly) which we want to test extensively before we are moving this issue to the next version.

As discussed with Nina today:
We will try the approach if an artifact/human remains entity is edited/created the place form field, which is used to set the super (place/feature/strategraphic subunit currently) is used for artifacts/human remains too.
One challenge will be usability because of too many table entries because of mixed place/feature/strategraphic subunit and additional artifact/human remains entries -> maybe Andi can implement tabs for tables containing only one class.

It is implemented in the develop branch and online on https://demo-dev.openatlas.eu and THANADOS.
At THANADOS I'm not really satisfied with the performance, e.g. when creating/updating an artifact about 40.000 entities are loaded (places, features, stratigrahpic units and artifacts) to be selected in the Super field which takes a while. Please let me know if it noticeably affects data entering and we will look into improving the performance.
